It's ok to slide so long as it's not the giant slide.

Sometimes life really needs the comfort foods. In moderation. Good luck to all.

Nice thread.

I had one of those life-changing moments a couple of weeks ago when I caught a side view of my entire self in a floor length mirror. When I was nude. Nekkid. Making no attempt to hold my tummy in. Or my shoulders back.

It was . . . bad. But good, because it finally got me off my ass and back to the gym. Good gym, too. Affiliated with the local hospital and college. All of the trainers are majoring in Health Physiology (or something like that).

Joined Weight Watched. I've attended 2 meeting. Been working out 4 times a week.

Okay, 'working out' is a bit misleading. I walk on a treadmill. BUT I've gone from 1.26 miles to 1.96 miles in 2 weeks. BUT no incline. Once I can walk 2 miles consistently in the 3.0 mph level without the treadmill shrieking "SLOW DOWN! YOU'RE GONNA KILL YOURSELF, YOU FOOL!", I'll add a bit of incline, and then I'll start on the machines, even though they look intimidating.

*Really like this gym. No Barbies in thongs. If one comes in, I tend to sit on her.

I like Weight Watchers, too. Something about having to show up once a week and weigh yourself is motivating.

In any event, I've lost 4.4 lbs, gone from 192.something to 188.somethig. My goal is 153.5 (can you tell I'm kinda anal?). I don't give a damn what the BMI scale sez. At 149, I look like crap. After a certain age (and I've reached "a certain age"), a woman looks bitter with a bit more weight. That's what my grandmother said. And she's always right, even though she is dead.

Funny, this is one of the few sites online where I'm comfortable posting my weight.

Also funny how much better I feel about myself. I mean, weight loss isn't noticeable yet. I haven't lost a pants size, but I'm *doing something* about it.

I'm still not ready to risk a full sized look at my 53 yr. old self in the mirror yet. So I keep my eyes shut a lot.

Makes it hell to drive, but you adjust.

WTG on the weight loss.

When you do drop that 1 size down. Do something to celebrate. Like getting yourself some flowers or candles. That will help with the incentive to lose more. Good luck.

Long time no chat!

Like Melody, I had an epiphany about my weight not too long ago. Mine happened when I unsuccessfully tried numerous times to get pregnant... I put 1+1+1, etc together and realized that weight was the biggest factor in that disaster. I started to slowly lose weight about 2 years ago and I mean slowly... only went down 15 lbs in the first year.

Then last year my brother was diagnosed with Diabetes. This kick started the biggest weight loss journey I have ever been on. I started following a glycemic index diet last February and have lost 45 lbs since then (total 60 lbs). Aside from the changes to my eating habits, I also make sure I exercise 20 - 30 minutes daily. I am down 4-5 dress sizes and am now smaller than I was 9 years ago when I first started chatting with this group.

Now the hard part is the plateau. My weight loss has slowed down because my body is now used to what I am doing with it. I have about another 60lbs to lose and it doesn't matter to me if it takes me another 2 years to do it. By the time I am at my final weight I will have developed a lifetime of healthy lifestyle habits.

I was curious about that book "The Skinny Bitch." I thought it wasn't going to be that good but it actually is! It opens your eyes to new things and it"s all about being as natural and healthy as possible. How to spot unhealthy ingredients in what you buy and a lot of other fun information. It has helped me improve my eating habits so I feel healthier. There's a little strong language so be warned =] It's kind of like they are trying to shock you into remembering the things they tell you.

Just a little fun fact =]

A lot of salt isn't good for you. HOWEVER a little bit from time to time is good for the taste.

Just a note as of to date I have went from 225 down to 169 pounds. The kicker is this past September 25 I found out I was a diabetic. I take pills but want to reach my goal weight. However there are a lot of diabetic cookbooks out there but none that hit common everyday meals for families i.e. pot roast veggies and mashed potatoes. So if any of you come along something that may help please post it.
Thank you
Have a great day!
P.s. A little bit of indulgence is good for when you are losing weight thus you dont crave what you didnt have, since you did have a smaller portion. Its when everything i.e. chocolate and whatever is take out of your usual diet so you can lose weight where it will make you binge thus adding not subtracting your weight.

The GI Diet

Hi Wolf_angel. I am following the GI diet. The author is Rick Gallop. I'd post the link but I haven't posted enough in wowwomen for it to work His books have recently been released in the US. He has several books, including a cook book. I too find that most (including the GI Diet) books do not have enough family meal ideas. What I like about the GI Diet though is that the principles are laid out and you can either follow recipes in the book or adapt some of your old favourites by adjusting where necessary.

Sorry to say, mashed potatoes are taboo with Rick's plan. I have, instead, used the occasional yam or sweet potato. My usual is to cook up baby potatoes and leave them whole.

Congrats on your weight loss! I am now down about 65 lbs myself and have about another 55 lbs to go. Seems like a lot but I know that if I keep tabs on portions and the types of foods I eat, I will continue to lose the weight.
