Hi Wageslave
I actually got the information from the Peta website before I started in October. That was one of the things I wanted to know about before starting up. I just went there, and you are correct it no longer has the article that I read back a few months ago anywhere that I can see. I couldn't even figure out how to find a past article. I do honestly know nothing of the LD50 tests, but I am going to find out. I couldn't find that on the Peta site either. The only thing I could find about Melaleuca on the Peta site was their name on the list of companies that test on animals. I'm sure I am not looking in the right place. Could you point me in the right direction on their site? I really appreciate it!

Okay, I am stupid. I didn't read to enter Melaleuca in the search box. I'll try it in awhile.
Thanks!

Melaleuca
Jendoc:
http://www.peta-online.org/alert/00/4.html Which is linked from: http://www.peta-online.org/alert/recent.html Which was posted on 4/25 of this year. I have several questions about the information Melaleuca is apparently providing. PETA states, as I posted, that Melaleuca commissioned an LD50 test, which stands for Lethal Dose 50%, on a competitor's product, not merely on their own products. An LD50 test involves testing a substance or substances on animals until the level at which 50% of the animals are killed is determined, this is also called an acute toxicity test. While their information could, potentially, be accurate, it is clearly non-responsive to the information PETA is providing in that it doesn't refer to the actual incident PETA is alleging, but rather seeks to shift attention to something else. But, frankly, I do not believe their information is accurate. To my knowledge there are no FDA regulations that require LD50 tests. Indeed, the fact that there are many, many companies that do not test on animals whatsoever would seem to indicate that the information Melaleuca is giving out is designed to confuse rather than enlighten. Jendoc, I sincerely hope you do not feel I am poking at YOU. You've been open and responsive, I appreciate this very much.

LD50
Acute Toxicity Tests
Acute toxicity tests, commonly called lethal dose or poisoning tests, determine the amount of a substance that will kill a percentage, even up to 100 percent, of a group of test animals. In these tests, a substance is forced by tube into the animals' stomachs or through holes cut into their throats. It may also be injected under the skin, into a vein, or into the lining of the abdomen; mixed into lab chow; inhaled through a gas mask; or introduced into the eyes, rectum, or vagina. Experimenters observe the animals' reactions, which can include convulsions, labored breathing, diarrhea, constipation, emaciation, skin eruptions, abnormal posture, and bleeding from the eyes, nose, or mouth.<font color=red>(1)</font> The widely used lethal dose 50 (LD50) test was developed in 1927. The LD50 testing period continues until at least 50 percent of the animals die, usually in two to four weeks. Like eye irritancy tests, lethal dose tests are unreliable at best. Says Microbiological Associates' Rodger D. Curren, researchers looking for non-animal alternatives must prove that these in vitro models perform "at least as well as animal tests. But as we conduct these validation exercises, it's become more apparent that the animal tests themselves are highly variable."<font color=red>(2)</font> The European Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods' Dr. Michael Ball puts it more strongly: "The scientific basis" for animal safety tests is "weak."<font color=red>(3)</font> http://www.peta-online.org/mc/facts/fsae4.html <font size="2">1.Rowan, A.N. Of Mice, Models, & Men: A Critical Evaluation of Animal Research (Albany: State University of New York Press, 1984). 2. I don't feel you are poking at me wageslave.
I should be knowledgeable on all of this information myself. I have not had a chance to go and check out the links you sent, but I am planning to tonight. Thanks for including them in your last post! I want to find out all of the information that I can about the company I work with. I do love Melaleuca's products and everyone that I have spoken with from the top brass to the newbies with the company are all so nice and have been helpful to me. We in our team and any other company should be able to answer all questions or find someone who can! I'm off to get the answers. I'll chat with you soon. Well sheesh, I didn't finish that! LOL I really am so glad we've got some real conversation going. I wasn't trying to imply that to post here you have to spell everything correctly, but a person can only take so much disrespect. If you don't care enough about my business to check for errors, don't bother.
Chatterasmom, those are great tips! Thanks. Summer is a busy time. School just got out here, and from 8:30 on it's *knock*knock*knock* "Can Nathan play?" Five minutes later *knock*knock*knock* "Can Nathan play yet? Why not? Can't he come out alone? We'll take good care of him. We promise. Why not? Why? Why? Why?" AHHHHHHHHH! My son is 3 years old, and I'm already losing my mind. We are looking for a teenage helper that can take our kids outside to play. I can't be out all day and get my work done, but it isn't fair to them either. Does anyone have good tips of where to find teens? We don't have a church, and the paper hasn't worked so far. Also, how much are you paying for sitters? Our last one got $10 an hour (MrHilie's idea) and we could never afford to do anything! LOL

Working From Home
I am a social worker who LOVES what I do but due to a disability that is making it harder to work a regular 9-5 job I started looking for some options that would allow me to work from home. I must have checked into 100 different 'business opportunities' and even tried and few. I had pretty much given up. Then, quite by accident I stumbled across a company that offers a healthcare benefit package and the best part wass their "household plan"- included me and MY PARTNER. To make a long story short I spent some time checking the company out with the BBB and talked to others who have started this business from their homes and I didn't find one negative thing and believe me I looked. I joined the company in April and am building my new business part time. At the rate I am going I should have replaced my current income within 6 more months and be able to resign from my 9-5 and be completly self employeed.
I found this site today when I was searching for gay and lesbian sites hoping to find some other people who work from home and get some ideas. Like I said earlier, I am a social worker NOT a business person. So, I am learning how to run my business as I go. The best selling point of this health coverage is the fact that it includes gay families. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can advertise online and get the word out about my business. I know there have to be ALOT of gay couples who would like to be able to get a healthcare plan that covers them both. But, I really have no idea where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jen ***edited by sysop. see profile for contact info*** |

Nice to meet you! The first place I would check would be with your company. Each one has different rules about how you can advertise on the internet, including terms you have to use while describing your position, etc.
I did ad copy for awhile and found out that people respond better to shorter ads. Twenty to thirty words has worked well in the past. Popular e-newsletters like Bizymoms, and sites like WOW are good places to advertise. Do a search for YourIntendedAudience Newsletter (i.e. Alternative Family Newsletters) and you'll stumble across at least one. If you check out a site where similar businesses are being advertised, skip it unless you can really make your ad stick out. If you go to WAHM you'll see what I mean by that. There are several people advertising for the same business, and it makes the company look desperate and not quite legitimate. For little or no cost advertising, check out banner exchanges and webrings. Just make sure it's all within the limitations of your contract, or you could lose your business. Geez, if I was better at doing this stuff I would be rich! LOL Dang these lazy bones anyway! Good luck, and hope to see you around the boards

Hey Wageslave
I just wanted to let you know I have the question about the tests out to about 10 people above me. I am still awaiting an answer. I will be off to my sister's wedding for the next 2 and a half weeks. I am hopeful that someone will have answered my questions by the time I return. I will then be able to answer your questions as well. Have a nice few weeks.

Dreamcatchers is yet ANOTHER business that does not detail what it does. I'm very skeptical of so called businesses that can't even tell you what they are about up front.

Just a friendly reminder that if someone wants ad space, you can contact WOW to find out the rates. The boards are not the place to put your ads.
Thanks!
