Problems with partner's son

I am a pretty evolved person in terms of understanding and being sensitive to the sexism and homophobia in our culture. I like my partner's grown son, but he often comes up with some homophobic and sexist comments and behavior that really trigger me. I have gotten extremely upset over it and have kind of given up discussing it with him as it is too tiring and he always responds with "I like women and gays, so what's the big deal?" It's clear that he really isn't interested in looking at these issues on a deeper level.

Much of this has caused flack between me and my partner. She doesn't like sexism either and criticizes him, but ultimately sides with him because of her emotional involvement. Any similar experiences?
