I'm having fun trying to learn a bit of Spanish on my own. I'll give you all some examples of why I like this language.

seesaw (subibaja) subir means rise and baja means lower.
glasses (anteojos) ante means before and ojos means eyes.
crotch (entrepierna) entre means between and pierna means legs.
playpen (corralito) translates to little corral.
nostrils (ventana de la nariz) means windows of the nose.
and . . . my naughty one:
Mexican slang for breasts is bubis (pronounced as boobies).

I'd love to have you girls post your own language funstuff here!

Jennifer, I am impressed. I'd love to learn a second language even thought I haven't yet mastered English LOL. What type of instruction are you using? PC / classroom ???

I have some books, but that's all Priscilla. The beginning for me was learning how their vowels were pronounced - and unlike English, they are very consistent. Once you get that down it's pretty easy to pronounce the words. Hey, I'm not fluent, but probably know more than most gringos! LOL!

I took part of a year of Spanish in school years ago. Also, my grandparents had a copy of a Spanish textbook that my mom had used in high school. I tried going through it as a kid and about the only thing I remember was from the first lesson. Went something like "Que es el burro? El burro es un animal. Es el burro grande? No, el burro no es grande." That's it. (I think you can pretty much figure out from that that a donkey is not a big animal...lol)

Well, like rjs, my only formal instruction of a foreign language was in high school, but I studied French (2 years). Over the years though, I have picked up some Spanish. I worked with a group of Mexicans, for a short period of time, who had never been to the US prior to working with us. So they didn't know a lick of English, but with a little patient it wasn't long before we were trying to teach each other the opposing language. So...i probably know just as much Spanish as I do French, which isn't a lot.

LOL! I have friends that learned their Spanish when they were working in restaurant kitchens! Spanish is a cool language and is similar in some ways to French.

Roflmao well most of the languages I have learned are from friends. I am now doing my best to retain and relearn some along with sign language. I also know some Cherokee and Lenape. Otherwise its fun learning! Hugs

I have started learning Mandarin but oh it's not going well! I am fluent in English and Spanish, my French is good and my German is appalling, but this Chinese thing? It doesn't seem to follow any rules! Well none that I can see anyway

A friend of mine is learning Mandarin as well. That must be difficult. I studied German in HS, so I know ein bisschen. I've done Spanish on my own, and it's so much easier than Deutsch!

Actually the hardest language to learn is English and this is from the Monterey DLI where I used to live near.

Ah heck I just want a hot bodied man forget the language ok? LOL Although in the movie Grown Ups with Adam Sandler (which you simply have to watch) then you will understand why sometimes the language shouldnt matter LOL
