replying to all who replied to smiley ,short of time today, so please forgive not answering individually, still freezing here in Australia, we,v just completed the world youth day for Catholics, his holiness the Pope has been to Aistralia for world Catholic Youth day from the Vatican in Rome, so I have been busy hosting some lovely young people from overseas, time now to get back to planning my new paving for the rear garden. cheers all keep smiling.

poohs big sister, thank you for your kind words, busy housing youth from overseas for world youth Catholic week, His Holiness the Pope has been in Australia this week for the celebrations. hundreds of thousand youth have arived from all over the world, so it,s been a very busy week. no time for gardening this week, looking forward to planning paving my back garden next spring, still freezing, keep smiling.

ooohh... I LOVE the Better Homes & Garden website for helping me to plan out my garden and placement of stones and such.... have you been to that site? It's got awesome ideas... i don't know if it has your "zones" for planting or not but you could definitely use the ideas for overall.

I saw that the Pope was in Australia ... has it been amazing? Don't forget to take time for yourself to enjoy that too, not just those you are housing.

Bare Naked ladies in my yard! This beutiful flower grows about 6-8 inches a day with thick succulent stalks, after reaching 12-24'' it blooms pink and blue tinged amarrillis type flowers with leaves only appearing after blooms have faded. Who would have thought bare naked ladies in my yard and i got not invite....for shame!

to pbs, I had a great time entertaining the folks from oveIrseas, one learns so much from listening to others, now its back to the garden again, yes I do put better homes and gardens.com.au they have such great ideas, I,m planning to place a centre tree in my back lawn and then place redgum mulch arround the rest of the back lawn where there is now grass because of the drought we are in at the minute, I will border the tree garden and place impatiens annuals arround paving arround the tree garden and mulch the rest of the grass over weedmat, half the backyard is paved so I only have a small area to finish off, can,t wait for spring. keep smiling

placing a tree in my lawns centre, paving arround it and then plant annuals arround the border then the rest of the grass I will mulch with red gum mulch, the back garden is paved to half of it,s width and I will mulch the rest to save water, we are in a dreadful drought at the minute yes pbs I do watch better homes and gardens.com.au they have some great ideas. by for now. keep smiling

We're growing pumpkins.

I'd love to be able to say it was intentional, but it was actually quite a shock when we found out we were doing it. Last year, for Halloween, we painted pumpkins instead of carving them. When we were done with them, we let the dogs have them to play with. Apparently, while they were chewing up the pumpkins, they also were planting the seeds.

I guess, technically, our dogs are growing pumpkins.

Catnip too! I planted some catnip just to see if it really grew from seeds. It did, so now the cats have their own supply of fresh catnip.

I know I'll see some rolling eyes but, I want some loofa seeds so I can grow some loofa sponges! Seriously, they do not come from the ocean, they grow on a vine. Imagine that!

oooh so much fun info......rjsfem spittin' tea....dogs gardening.......and homegrown catnip!!!! LOL! Okay so here a story for ya'll.
A long time ago I had a garden that was just on the other side of the fence from my neighbors garden. I couldn't understand why every year his tomato plants looks so bright red and yummy looking. while mine looked scrawny. Then one day I caught him out weeding and thouht to ask what he did to get such great tomatoes. He said " I just give them a quick 'flash' everyday".

LOL right?...... I laughed at him but later that week when watering I looked around...saw no one.....and thought, what the heck and just lifted my shirt really quick and 'flashed' my garden. Well I tried to do this often...you know...just to see.
<sigh> my tomatoes didnt grow...in fact I think it made them wilt. But alls well.....you should've seen the size of my cucumbers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am stumped here!!

I have 5 wondering rose bushes, and I am not sure if I am supposed to trim them back this fall, or do I just leave them alone? I know you can transplant in the fall, but not sure on the trimming them back part. Any information will be great

I don't trim mine..they are growing up a trellis, and they get more blooms each year. when they fill the trellis completely, I might... just to keep them on the trellis and not the house. My mom has never trimmed hers..she has three of them along the side of her house..they are GORGEOUS!

oh...and she's had them more than 10 years.

I've too had mine over 10 years, but I always keep them trimmed. Just depends on your preference I guess.

I have always heard to at least 'dead head' your roses., so the energy goes to the rest of the plant, not in trying to make seeds. Cut the fading blooms back to the 1st set of 5 leaves under the bloom. Let the rest grow. For climbing roses, all of next years bllooms will appear on this years growth. I love roses too. would love to have a square garden with a wall of rose bushes.
Now this year i have been amazed by my morning glory vines. I knew they grew fast but from seed this year i have a nearly 40 ft vine. grew right up my porchrail, grabbed my tv antennae wire and is covering my old ancient TV anttane on the roof. I might get that golden egg yet! lol
