Minty, I'm not thrilled with it either. I thought it was a good concept for a "reality" show, but they way they've played it off, it's become something much less than what it could have been. But maybe taking the high road wouldn't have gotten them the ratings they were after? Either way it's not as good as I thought it was going to be.

Feminism is the belief that women and men are equal. No more no less. Anyone who believes this basic principle is a Feminist - however they feel that this should manifest itself in the real world.
If a man (or woman) is hostile to feminism, they are openly declaring that they believe that women are and should be inferior to men (or the other way around). I know that the word is misunderstood but that frankly is no excuse.
It is a simple belief and you either agree with it or not. Those that don't are very messed up people and probably shouldn't be encouraged to breed.
Next time a man gives you grief over feminism, ask him if he believes that women are equals to men. If he says yes, take great pleasure in informing him that he is in fact a feminist himself! If he says no, why on earth would you waste your time, energy and breath on talking to such a cretin?

Great definition of feminism. Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I was one of those politically active, feminist hippies. I was attending college at the state capitol and participated in many sit in's and some rowdy demonstrations. Ahhh, the good old days! LOL!

With gay marriage being a front page issue now, it has reminded me of the legal marginalising of woman. Supposedly, this country(US) was founded on the rule of law with certain unalienable rights. But, women are still not recognized as equals under the law. The Equal Rights Amendment was never ratified by enough states to be added to the constitution. I've been being obnoxious lately by sending my elected "representatives" some tersely worded emails.

Gay rights, women's rights are civil (legal)rights that are supposed to be guarantteed (sp?) through the constitution. Churches/religions have the right to choose whether to marry same sex couples. But, the government does not. A marriage license is a legal document. Simple and easy. Women are equal, simple and easy.

How do things get so muddled up and what are governments afraid of?

Brede do you rally want my opinion what goverment is afraid of????
I agree with you on the issue of Same Sexed partners and marriage is a Civil Rights issue.
I am so divided on the how I feel bout people bringing God into the marriage debate. Where were these God fearing people when one man wanted to take God out The Pledge of Alligence? Where were they when several people took prayer out of public schools?? I don't see how religion and goverments should be seperate for some issues and NOT seperate when it comes to denying people the right to be happy!
Ok I am off my soap box.. and yes I am writing several members of Congress about it. I might just get out my telephone book and get the numbers to local Goverment officials and voice my opinion. I doubt Govennor Arnold would like to hear my opinion LOL.

I doubt the Governator would like that either. I'm in Florida where I have to take a double dose of the Bush Empire. (Bush Ceasar's younger brother is our Governor)

As far as I am concerned, Christians who want to protest gay marriage should revoke their government-contract marriage-license. If that want to be totally scriptural about it, the ten commandments are in the old testament/covenant with God. The new testament that makes them Christians clearly states to "give unto ceasar what is ceasars." The new testament only has 2 commandments 1) love god with all your heart, soul and spirit and 2)love your neighbor as you love yourself. I don't see any of these protesting Christians following anything in the new testament. Or giving up what is Ceasar's.

Did you know that the legal marrige-contract with the govt. provides over 1000 legal protections to married people? And a religious rite provides none of it. So, until those protesters are willing to end their legal protections by divorcing under civil law saying that a higher authority views them as married, I aint't interested in talking to them!

I hope I didn't garble everything I was trying to express, but I can do that sometimes. I am so glad to find someone that thinks the way I do!

As an aside: How do I create my signature? Or is "brede" my signature? Don't mind me, I'm just a computer dummy!

PS to everyone: I'm not disparaging Christians or their views. I started as a pew warmer, became a pentacostal born again Christian, and then became a Zen-Buddhist-Pagan-Christian. I have equal respect for everyone who conscientously practices their personal belief system or their lack of one. As long as they are not imposing their belief system on someone else.

I'm the same as Atman, believing there are many kinds of feminism so calling myself a "Feminist" never suited me. I consider myself a "Humanist." As someone who spent a lot of time with men, make no mistake that they, too, are pulled down and bullied by society. They are bombarded with pictures of perfection, they have a higher suicide rate, and make no mistake: men are also sexually/emotionally abused. I don't believe in abuse or feeling as if you're no good just because society says it's okay...no matter if you're male or female.

I believe in gender equality type of feminism than the version of women thinking men are evil type of feminism. I grew up with a single mom with a feminist view and lived through that since. My marriage is an equal partnership where we both share responsibilities such as cleaning, cooking, etc. Growing up with my mother alone, I learned to do some heavy duty stuff like lifting heavy objects, fixing things, etc. At first I thought it was stupid, but in the long run it helps. When a strange guy sees me doing some heavy duty stuff and the type that was raised to helping women first, at first it makes me uncomfortable and I'm acting all tough, then I realized, hey that's polite and give in. In my young generation in my 20s, the guys saying that girls can't do guy things or the other way around seem to have deminised more, but I know some of that tension is still there. Sexism is still there, but not as bad as the when the first women's sufferage happened. That was my favorite topic in American history.

So true Moniker and sunglatisha! So we do what we can when we can or have too. Balance is part of life. To walk in a balance we must not forget the men. They are only human too. So as well the religion of others tis their path and their choice. If I learn something I use it for myself. Yet never mock anyone's path, insight or decision.
Have a great day!
