{{{{{Skye}}}}} I love to drive a stick - so much more control, especially in traffic and bad weather! My truck's a stick, and I suffer confusion when driving an automatic - I might as well drive a stick, because I'm always mentally telling an automatic when to shift, and of course they never shift when *I* would.

{{{{{Lou}}}}} This incoming Front looks like a doosey on the radar - 4 separate bands of clouds, and even an eye, not to say it's a hurricane, because it's not. The first band has passed, and had little to no moisture, but the closer to the center you get, the wetter it is. So, starting later today, we should go through the wet/dry/wet/dry cycle a few times between now and the end of *next* weekend. (Brought to you by Biker Weather News, California!

) I have to remind myself that rain keeps the plants growing and the reservoirs full; I *hate* to get out in the rain!

Ok, that was about half of what I meant to say.

{{{{{Lou}}}}} I remember learning to drive the little Renault Dauphine my family owned on the dirt roads out by Grandpa Si's farm with Mom coaching and coaxing me to keep it between the ditches. Before my Dad would let me get my permit, I had to be able to explain to him the theory of operation of the internal combustion engine, *why* one must not ride the clutch, etc. I think it was easier to learn to fly the plane, seriously!
If I've told this before, forgive me, but it's a favorite story. Once I had my permit, my Dad took me out for increasingly difficult drives. Finally, we tackled the Ozark hills down near Branson. Dad said to make a left at the next road, and being a rookie, I cut the corner short, and came almost nose-to-nose with a big, black hearse. Totally unnerverd, I yanked the wheel and put us into the right ditch. Meanwhile, I hadn't told my foot to get off the gas, so we went back up on the road, across the (thankfully clear) road, and into the left ditch, where I finally had the presence of mind to get off the gas. My Dad, bless his heart, just said, "What are you going to do now?" I sheepishly said I was going to restart the car, which had died, look long and hard both ways, and pull back onto the road properly. He approved, so I did just that, even though I was shaken. I think it says a lot about my Dad that he didn't yell or make me let *him* drive home - those ole Marine Corps nerves of steel have served him well all his life. (He teaches and tests big-rig drivers these days - talk about nerves of steel!) Anyway, I think my confidence was solidified that day when he let me drive the windy roads home.

(((((biker))))) ROFL to your story. My dad also taught me to drive his column shift pick-up in a dirt gulley. My father is no teacher. He just kept yelling things like, "It's an H, baby!" "Shift, baby!" LOL I've never driven anything but a stick since.

I'm trying to strategize laundry loads here! (Ever try to strip a bed with an indignant cat in the middle of it? ROFL!)
{{{{{Lou}}}}} Another vivid memory with the little Renault Dauphine: the first night I had my driver's license, I took my best friend to the neighboring city to see her boyfriend (against my parents' explicit imperative to stay *out* of the city). I *almost* had shifting down pat, but not quite consistently yet. We all went for a ride in that funny little clown-car, and her boyfriend quipped, as I madly ground the gears looking for first gear at a stop light, "Hey while you're at it, ground up a pound for me too!"

I still know him, and he's *never* let me live it down!

Oh, and my meterology is apparently rusty (must be all this rain!

). It looks like the worst of *this* storm has decided to turn inland way north of us, so we're only getting the trailing edge. We aren't due for a serious soaking until Thursday or Friday, and then again over the weekend - not sure which day.

And I'd like to know whether the persistent rumor that Elvis is alive is evidence that Americans long for a divine hero.

Okay, so that last question regarding Elvis as cultural revelation committed the fallacy of begging the question. You can skip that one. But the one about smilies in the subject line stands.

I am at work. It is foggy. I was interrupted during my early morning coffee by a person who wanted to tell me that he hated CA, wanted to go back to Virginia, and missed the seasons.

Announcement: CALIFORNIA HAS SEASONS

The seasons in CA require a subtlety of eye, nose, and flesh. Not everyone possesses the delicacy required.
