A friend's shar pei is having puppies soon....I'm having a very hard time convincing myself that now is not the time for a new puppy...

I understand THAT, chana. I have always had a dog around and after recently losing my 10 year old, sweet as could be, Golden, I'm SO tempted. So far I've managed to listen to my voice of reason. My kids are spread all over and now I am free to pick up and visit them without the worry of a dog sitter. I also constantly try to convince myself that having no dog hair and no yard cleanup, is a good thing. I'm trying hard, but when I visit friends with dogs, I'm on their floor with the dog all night. LOL

The Westminster Show is one of my favorites. I was happy to see the Newfie won since little dogs win most of the time.

I have a 10+ pound mutt. Her father was a working bloodhound out at the local jail, and her mother was a boxer who participated in all the AKA obedience trials. Emma looks like a female bloodhound (same size - 90 lbs, same coloring, webbed toes, oily coat) except that her skin and ears are not nearly as droopy as a pure bred bloodhound. She will also bay instead of bark if she is so inclined. I think she has OC because she simply can't live without a tennis ball. Emma will even sleep with it in her mouth.

And she is my big, old baby who can't understand why I don't want her on my lap!

When she was young, she had the exuberance of a boxer (meaning - she was wild, crazy and into everything!). As she has grown older, she reminds me of the bloodhound Jeb Clampett had on the "Beverly Hillbillys."

We put a training collar on her as soon as we got her. At one point in time, a friend of ours was a dog handler with the Sheriff's Department. He told us to bring her over and see his un-neutered, male "well trained" dog. We walked into the house, the male tried to mount her, she slammed him to the ground with his belly up. When she got off of him, he stayed belly up and whining! Then we took them both to the backyard and the two men were showing off the training. Emma was by far the better trained dog. The friend said that was because she wasn't attack trained. We had him put on his protective sleeve and try to grab me. Emma had him down on the ground in seconds. We never trained her to do that at all!!

She is a great dog! However, since the dog and the cat are both senior citizens now, they won't be replaced for when they die. We need a break from the managerie that we kept when Pirate was growing up.

Dogs are such good company, i have two, Rembrandt ( Papillon X Corgi), inherited him from my neighbour, he is an older, dignified fella, and Makita ( Staffy X Shepherd X Kelpie X Cattledog LOL) she is a 10month pup, real dynamo. complete oddball but everyone adores her because of her loving and friendly nature. we go bushwalking every day and i have a dogsitter come and walk them if i am away all day ( more than the usual time when i am at work). i live in the country and most dogs here are purely working dogs and treated as such... my "kids" are spoilt LOL

Since Emma died a few weeks ago, I keep thinking about getting another dog. I know that I am not ready at this point. I'm sure that we will get another. I was going to get a bloodhound (like Emma), but I've pretty much decided against it. Maybe a chocolate lab? Has anyone ever had one?

brede, labs are wonderful dogs, (though i am partial to retrievers, particularly goldens) sometimes the might take a bit longer to mature, but they are fine pets with usually good temperments and are good companions. but, when all is said and done, you'll know which is the right dog for you!

Thanks, amc929. Goldens are great dogs, as are setters. I am into extremely low maintenence dogs. We have found that if you get a female, waiting until after their first heat to get them spayed really helps. Males, on the other hand, we neuter as soon as possible. The testosterone seems to affect the aggressiveness patterns in the brain, so we try to minimize it.

We always neuter/spay cats as young as we possibly can.

I had a friend with an English setter that was spayed very young. She never matured either physically or mentally. Puppy-brain dogs are not my cup of tea. I've also known several other dog owners who have had the same experience.

We saw a black lab at a local American Indian Festival today. She was a real sweetheart. I'm not sure about a lab now; I like very large dogs. I plan on checking other breeds out, but I will probably end up get a mixed breed from the pound. Or maybe I will get another bloodhound. If I do, I am going to find the runt from a working dog. They are bred for brains, not droopy skin. Bloodhounds can have serious eye problems because of the weight of their skin around and below their eyes.

Whatever I eventually decide to do, it might be a while. But, you never know!

When i met frank about 6 years or so ago, he had a golden who was already elderly. a few years after we started living together, he had to put him down. it took almost two years b4 he was ready for another pet. (myself, i'm the kind that has to get another one right away.) but, i had brought a cat with me, and he helped frank a bit with the loss. i've always been a believer, that somehow your pets choose you, weather you think your ready for them or not. when frank decided it was time for another dog, we had one in a week, and i believe he was waitng for us. that's how my kitty came to me. and if we had the room, we'd have a couple of each!
bty..we got another golden, and he is just the best dog despite all the hair..good thing i can take him outside now and brush him.lol

My late, old, mostly bloodhound, Emma, had a very short coat and didn't shed a lot. However....she would stink within 15 minutes of a bath because of her oily coat! Most working hounds have been bred to protect them while they are in the water. She also had huge, webbed feet!
