My water garden is doing great! Two goldfish are thriving I think and the lilie is blooming, I did something right although 2 goldfish have died and one disappeared.

Well....in the goldfish community, I don't think your water garden experiment would be considered "great".

Hi Terri. A friend used to have a goldfish pond, and I thought it was beautiful. Here's a bit of information that I found regarding new ponds. Hope it helps . . .

"It takes a new filter at least 6-8 weeks to
mature - that is for the nitrifying bacteria to start to colonize the filter
media. Ammonia is freely excreted by fish as part of normal metabolism
and during this maturation time the levels of these toxins can rapidly
build up to dangerous levels. It is important to only introduce only few
fish at a time during this period, and constantly monitor (at least twice
weekly) water quality for ammonia, pH and nitrite."

A filter? HAH....this is a water garden, experimental....down to two fish who are actually getting bigger...I think it is survival of the fittest!! YEAH

Woooohoooo Terri!

On another note, fall is my favorite time of year. Nothing beats throwing on a sweater to go out for a walk on a cool, crisp, sunny autumn day. I love the smells, the sounds of leaves under feet and the beautiful colored leaves.

But this year, there are very few colors at all. We had a record breaking dry summer so instead of beautiful oranges, yellows, reds, the leaves are simply staying green or turning greyish brown and falling off the trees. Sad, eh? It's just not the same when I go for walks this year.

Are others noticing the same in their area? I'm in Southwestern Ontario Canada.

Fall in Florida....80 during the afternoon....60's at night. Anyway....I have one fish left, he is from the original group and is named Ricky! He is very active.

We are in a drought here in southern California, too, but we did not have a hot summer, and fall has turned chilly long before usual. As a result, my tomatoes took a l-o-n-g time to redden. Just last week, I cut back the tomato vines, and I notice now that the many tomatoes still left are turning red because they are getting direct light. The liquid amber tree has the beginnings of red and gold leaves. We are hoping for RAIN.

Fall is also my fav time of the year. Colorful world, wind blown hair, a chill to get rid of those pesky summer mesquitos. Love the cold breeze in the AM it makes me feel refreshed as I walk to work. Wake up and be glad you're alive time of year.
Really has turned cold earlier this season though I have to agree with you there.
Ponders about this coming winter?? Last winter was very mild here, and the summer very dry, Fall seems to be colder than the norm.. Hmmmmm perhaps we should stock up could be a blistery winter on the horizon.

We had a long period of drought this past summer and the big apple tree in our back yard has yielded barely any fruit. It's odd. Last year, I was picking up apples and filling 30-gallon barrels. This year, I haven't had to pick up a single apple. There were so few that the deer, raccoons and other critters got them all for me (thanks, critters!).

Leaves are falling off the trees very late, though. We can rake leaves into the street until mid-November, but a lot of the trees still have quite a few leaves. I'm guessing another week or so and they'll be bare.

I planted about a hundred bulbs last weekend and am looking forward to spring to see if I did it right!
