I have been dealing with the weight issue from both the losing and gaining perspectives.

Because I lose weight rapidly when I am sick and I never want to eat when I am sick, I come at weight control from a different direction. The last time I was sick I lost 42lbs way too fast. Not that I minded, but it wasn't a healthy way to go.

My doctor is very strict about my calorie and fluid intake as I have been hospitalized several times for dehydration. The doc told me that you need a minimum of 1200 calories a day to protect brain function. He also said that consuming 1200 calories will still protect your brain even while exercising. It's something about the brain self protection, the calories you use while exercising will then come from your energy stores. It is also very difficult for me to get the proper vitamin and nutrient mix as food doesn't stay in me long enough. I have to take vitamins, minerals and calcium.

My parents have been using the South Beach diet with great success. I have been adapting some of the diet's principals to help restore some energy, etc. It has more fiber in it than I am allowed.

Oh, yeah. If you are having trouble with size 10 pants because they are too tight around your waist, try men's blue jeans. I gave up on women's sizes and wear men's because they have a looser waist. I wear a size 10 (again!!) but the waist is too tight, the equivalent in men's is a size 30 waist. Another advantage with men's jeans, you can get different lengths.

I have the opposite problem. Even when I'm heavy, I *have* a waist! There don't seem to be ANY jeans made that fit both hips and waist.. I end up with a cold draft down the back, and if I wanted that I wouldn't bother with clothes at all!

I hate elastic waists, but that's mostly what I wear. *Some* pairs of "just my size" brand fit right, but I have to try on a lot of them, as they vary hugely within what claims to be the same style and size.

LOL, I guess I was thinking of "skirts" as the gathered-at-the-waist, full-to-the-ground ones that Navajo women wear... I forgot there are constructed ones just like pants!

I hate to do it, but I think I'm going to have to be strict with myself and go back on induction (I've done Atkins for over a year). Not only am I not losing weight, but it's crept back up a pound or two. Time to zap it before it gets bigger!

My mother has that hour-glass shape, I take after my dad. My mother wears lee jeans that have elastic on the sides instead of the back or the entire waist band. They are quite flattering and she says they are very comfortable.

Being ignorant of Adkins (other than I am not allowed to do it because of my health problems), what is "induction?"

"Induction" is the first phase of Atkins, where you eat only 20 grams of carbohydrate a day. Basically, a 2-cup salad and 1 cup of other veggies. No nuts, which I'll really miss, and limited amounts of cheese.

I guess that is why I am not allowed to try it. Roughage makes me sick and there are many vegetables that I am not allowed to have. Plus, being lactose intolerent, I can't eat cheese.

Ah well. I've got about 10 pounds I'd like to lose, but all I really have to do is wait until I get very sick again. Liquid diets (mostly water) will take weight right off you. Not a healthy way to lose weight!

I've been trying to reduce cholesterol and saturated fat in my diet. I've been eating more fresh veggies and fruits, and don't eat butter, fried foods and a lot of meat anymore. I lost a good amount of weight right at the start, but now I've hit a plateau and haven't lost or gained for two weeks.

One thing that really helped me was just going through my kitchen and throwing out all the snacks and foods I knew were high in saturated fats and cholesterol. After that I went to a pretty nice grocery store (Fairway) and bought all kinds of healthy food. I also tried a lot of new fruits and vegetables, olives, hummus and so on to try and find healthy snacks to replace all the old fatty ones.

I also keep track of everything I eat and drink with an online diet journal. That has turned out to help motivate me and it really makes me think more about what I am eating when I know I will be writing it down later.

I've been trying hard over the years to lose weight. I've found that when I'm happy (or, rather, not depressed), I really have to struggle to lose weight. However, I have managed to lose (& keep off) over 35 pounds in the past year...I know that if there was a Weight Watchers' closer to home, I'd sign back up in a heartbeat. (The Weight Watcher's on the internet doesn't seem to work as well for me...)

I can't believe that in May I wanted to lose 10 lbs.!!!

Well, I'm really sick again and haven't had any solid food for two weeks. I've lost way too much weight. Wish I could get some from all of you who are trying to lose.

I was a vegetarian for many years. It really helped lower my cholestrol. It takes a while for the results to show up, but they did. When I was in the hospital for surgery and got another new diagnosis, they gave me a list of foods that I am not allowed to eat. It would have been easier if they had just told me what I was allowed to eat. I went back to eating meat, mostly chicken and fish. Greg loves to fish, so there's alot of fish in our freezer. I still have to take cholesterol lowering medications.

That's great news about losing and keeping off 35 lbs. in a year. Did you use a combination of diet and exercise?

Me on my liquid diet:

rjs...I suffer from the same thing...if I am happy in life, I can't for the LIFE OF ME...LOSE anything..but when depressed, it drops off like water running down hill. I have been struggling (and still am) to drop the extra "happy weight" I have put on in the past 6 months. I weigh more now than I ever have in my life. I just can't seem to really find the motiviation to make me stick with it and really want to lose weight..I know all the reasons why I should..and I've told myself over and over the health reasons, my kids, etc. but... that doesn't work for me...sigh. So... since that wasn't working..I took my car key off the key ring. Now... if I want to go somewhere (we live in a very small town where everything is within a mile or so of our house) and it is in town...I walk there. (as long as I'm not gonna be getting the months worth of groceries). I figure if nothing else, at least I'm getting a bit of exercise this way! Hopefully, it will start me on a track that I can keep on....

There was a report on TV this morning that was very interesting. Women who were heavy and fit (and if you are doing all that walking, you must be fit) are at lower risk for cardio-vascular problems then women who are thin and out of shape.

That was something I had always wondered about. I'm not very fit at the moment and that bothers me more than being underweight.
