((((((((((( WOW's Roomies ))))))))))))))
Just a quick note....found out this past week I am diabetic. Not doing so well. Yet doing research as much as possible. Awaiting for doctor to get back in his office to get more answers than I have now. These are answers he needs to give me i.e. what type I am i.e. Type 1 or 2; whether or not I need a meter. This is due to all the info I have read from the American Diabetes Association about checking my blood sugars. I dont have a clue on either of those. So amidst chaos and confusion, I am doing ok for now....at times. Wishing you all the best. Have a great day!

I've been diabetic for almost 8 years. I take Glucophage pills so I never had to take insulin or pumps. I guess I'm lucky. I don't even use those readings to check my sugar, as long as I feel ok that's all that matters. But you'll be fine wolfie, todays medicines does miracles.

Hey, Wolf, I can sort-of relate. While I'm not diabetic, my SO was. When we found out, we were in major shock. Unfortunately, he was walking around for a couple of days thinking he had the flu. When I finally forced him to go to the hospital ("You have a choice: I call for an ambulance, or I drive you, but either way, YOU'RE GOING!!!") and they checked for diabetes, his blood sugar was 600!
When he finally got out of the hospital (12 days later), it took us a while to get into the routine of everything. But it is doable. Honest. |

Good luck on working with the diabetis. Hopefully you can do the pills and not the shots. Either way wishing you the best. Keep us posted.

Yes its stressful! Not knowing certain things. Worrying about what I could eat and etc. Not able to talk to the doctor and getting answers ugh! But doing more research and seeing a few other things. Plus talking to friends is helping a lot. Have a great day!

Is there a teaching hospital near you? There's one near us (in fact, where SO found out he was diabetic) and they had classes/meetings/etc for people with different things such as diabetes. They also have/had a list of doctors, nurses, etc. who were up on all the latest in diabetes, etc. Punchline, give the hospital (esp. a teaching one) a call and see if they can put you in touch with any groups, etc. where you can get all the info you want and need.

First off WolfAngel, you pay your doc for answers. Frankly, if he isn't calling you back or answering such simple questions, you need to find one who will. One thing is certain, if he has diagnosed you with diabetes you need a monitor. If your local hospital has a diabetes clinic he should schedule you for a consult for classes and a meeting with a dietician.
I'd be willing to bet you have Type 2 diabetes. It can be controlled with diet, medication and exercise. A lot of diagnosed Type 2 diabetics can control it through diet and exercise and can stop medication, sometimes. Failing to do that most times leads to being an insulin dependent diabetic. It's actually not hard to control through diet once you understand the basics of how your body reacts to food. The American Diabetes Association has a great website you can use to access diet and information. I wouldn't depend on how you feel to gauge what your blood sugar is. Everyones bodies react differently to blood sugar levels and the only way to know for sure is to test it. Also, remember, research is a good thing but there's a lot of misconceptions out there about diabetes and its causes and treatments. A good doctor, dietician and group will help you answer those questions. |

Well not much
Went to doctor's office this morning....was told I am type 2 and that he is waiiting a month to see how well I do on medication. That is what I was told.
I have gone over the American Diabetes website....I have devoured books i.e. Diabetes for Dummies. Not a clear path on food choices. I just know to cut down on carbohydrates and sugars. So I have been doing a food journal daily. Take my meds and walk a lot...will be rejoining the gym next week. I believe the local teaching hospital is in another town. Tomorrow morning I will be giving them a call. See what is available. Tyvm for the tip! So that is where I am now. Thank you all for the help and support. I am really disgusted, frustrated and very angry-mad-p.o'ed cause I lost weight not to have this happen and look at where I am now. THank you all again! Have a great day!

The food choices are simple- High protein, low carbs. It really isn't hard to figure out. If you can work it in a budget, e-diets has some good meal plans. I didn't do the diabetic one since I can't stand cottage cheese. However, their plain weight loss diet is fantastic. You'd have to substitute things but they have a chart that helps you do it.
Diabetes doesn't come with a book. It's all trial and error. You can be the only judge of what works and what doesn't. Your docs choice about the meds is actually a good one. He's looking to see if the meds will work although one month won't tell much. We did 3 months then had the A1C ran again to see what my 3 month averages were. |
