Do you remember the bruhah a while back about airlines charging more for fat people to fly? Well, Maine has a legislator that is trying to legislate weight.
Sun/Journal, Lewiston Me. Legislators proposed Friday a spate of new laws aimed at saving the state a billion dollars a year by getting Mainers to slim down. Rep. Sean Faircloth, D-Bangor said the cost of medical services required to treat the obese and overweight now is outpacing that of treating smokers. ?This is the No. 1 health issue of the new century,? he said. The problem costs the Maine health care system about $1 billion a year, he said. ?There is no greater fiscal issue that we have to address.? What next? They want to take away the tools that the schools have for raising money for extracurricular activities. It would impact every school system in Maine in that they would have to revamp their entire lunch menu at a time when they are experiencing severe cuts in budgets as it is. Kids would no longer be selling those candy bars that they have sold for years. They wouldn't even be able to eat a tuna sub because it would contain more fat than this bill would allow. I find this scary. Weight has become a fiscal issue. Not to mention that if kids don't like what they eat they won't eat and that is a worse problem. |

Tops .. I'll show you the problem with overweight people . You kinda hit the nail on the head when you said " They want to take away the tools that the schools have for raising money for extracurricular activities. " The budget cuts affect the extracurricual actvities sush as sports . As you know to be invovled in sports you have to exercise. When you don't exercise guess what ?? Yup overweightness sets in!! In my humble opinion if Maine's Goverment wants to tackle to issue of being overweight then they need to stop cutting the budget for the school system.
Califorina's school system is the first place the Governor of Ca looks at when they want to "save" money. The first thing to go is of course physical education and the extracurrical actvites such as sports. Now the goverment wonders why there is a new generation of overweight children and young adults. In my personal opinion if they cut their saleries a little bit and all the "extra benefits" such as cars and gas for these cars they won't need to tap into the schools budgets. I still don't understand why the Governor of each state, Vice President and President get free housing and their utilities paid when they have a salary that is MORE then most people make and still pay their own housing and utilites. * Steps down from her soap box*

Ohh How couold I forget that LOL? How much do you wanna bet that the same free medical the common person who can't afford medical care isn't the free medical care that the goverment officials get? I am not saying in any way that Goverment. officials don't deseve to be compensated for their time .. I do think it would make sense if their saleries were more resonable instead of so high with all the "extra benefits".
I also agree that this country on a whole does have an obesity problem but to say it needs to be addressed the same way cigerattes is adressed is wrong. I feel that people choose to smoke.. some obese people choose to be obese but many overweight people don't chose to be overweight. I am a person who doesn't choose to be overweight. I am not sitting at a table eating three or four HUGE overflowing plates of food .. I eat pretty much what a normal person would eat. I have seen and known obese people to eat three or four heaping plates of food at every meal ... that is an example of choosing to be obese. I know I could exercise more. I also know in order for me to shed the pounds I have to exercise more then the average person needs to exercise and to keep the weight off I need to still exercise more then the average person exercises other wise I gain the weight back plus more. I don't know if there will ever be a simple way for the goverment to deal with America's obesity poroblem but one of the easieast ways and least expensive ways would be to prevent it in the first place. If the goverment wants people to have heathier young adults they need to stay out of the schools budget and look into ways of making their saleries and "extra benefits" more reasonable.

The thing that bothers me is it makes me wonder what they will pick on next. Metabolism is also an issue in obesity. Not everyone is obese because they overeat and I doubt that each individual child/teen has the time to eat a lot of snacks & candy over the course of a school day from the vending machines. Obesity isn't a school issue, it's a home issue.
The powers that be tend to legislate their pet issues. What will be the next thing that they decide is the biggest budget crises? There are laws out there that say that people under a certain IQ can't marry. There are laws against being a lesbian or a homosexual. Government is intruding more and more into the everyday lives of our citizens and putting it under the umbrella of Homeland Security. It is now legal for the U.S. Armed Services to wire tap your phone. A search warrant is no longer necessary for the government to search your home. The basic protections that we as citizens of the United States have enjoyed have been successfully eroded. I find these things very scary. |

And well you should be Tops. I had heard that also, that now the police don't need a search warrant to search your home, all they have to use is "Well it's for homeland security" now, or something else along those lines. That's just scary. We are trying to eradicate the very people we are becoming.
We want to go bargin ginto contries to make things more like us. Yea, well who says we are right in the first place ? That's just pure arrogance. Personally, I think all of this is Junior's sad attempts to fill Papa's shoes. Tartie |

Heaven help us, if you are right, Tartie...... I didn't particularly enjoy the time papa and his predecessor held this country hostage.

Not that i am in any way agreeing with budget cuts hitting schools...i for one remember eating all day long from the vending machines..my weight didnt hit me til later in life, because i was active..but, the eating disorder i have started back that far...but, other than that..education is a key issue that need not be cut in any way shape or form..just as they educate against smoking...over eating and eating disorders should be discussed as well. It seems like when it comes to cutting the budget..they look at the education..and the elderly...not their own pocketbooks...

oops..one more thing.....educating about anorexia seems to be the only thing that kids get educated about..not the one that eats to stuff feelings..and doesnt purge or starve afterwards...which is the category i fall into..and the issue of helping adults...hmm..they want us to lose weight..and stop smoking..especially the smoking..yet insurance companies wont put the money out to pay for the prescriptions that are proven to work in helping us to stop...its been said quitting smoking is harder than quitting certain drugs..and i would definately agree with that...yes its a choice to pick up that first cig, but, even with choosing to quit...the physical affects force most of us to pick up again...just as a drug user would..steps off my soap box now..LOLOL...Have a great weekend all.
