That's what lawyers are for.

The argument that seeing an elephant (or a giraffe or a penguin or....) in a zoo or a circus is a person's only opportunity to see that animal is a common one when defending the actions of zoos and circuses.

How much does it enrich ones life to see an elephant? These animals are taken out of their environment and brought to a city to live in a pen, or to perform, to entertain humans. Why?

I don't buy it. There are so many other ways to learn about the world around us....it doesn't have to be up close and personal, with an animal on display, prodded with a bullhook.

Circuses have a bad reputation all around. The Shriners may have a less bad reputation because they don't own their own animals...they 'rent' them from other circuses, thus escaping federal regulation.

There's a lot of things I've never seen in my life....my life is no less rich not having seen them.

Circuses kind of freak me, much like a Stephen King novel!

Except Cirque du Soleil, which very consciously uses only human performers.

Lest I sound uncaring, animal cruelty is HIGH on my list of concerns, be it labs or circuses, or people who neglect their pets. Those types all should be TIED TO STAKES AND BEATEN WITH STICKS!

Has anyone been watching that mini-series program thing about Cirque du Soleil? I think it's on Bravo. The show about how they put together Cirque du Soleil is almost as interesting as the show itself. What an incredible group of performers. Talk about hard work.

I DID see it a couple of years ago. It was phenomenal. I loved it. I'm also ashamed to admit that they were just here for the past six weeks with their new show and I never got there. I'm such a slug sometimes.

I hadn't heard of Cirque du Soleil before but I did find some information about it. It sounds like an awesome show. Also, I don't disagree that the argument I used about children not getting to see elephants otherwise is a tired one. That was the first thing that came to mind.

When I brought up that potential law concerning elephants it made me think closer the things I have always believed but never researched. So I've been looking closer. As I've stated before, abuse of any animal is unacceptable. Apparently my eyes needed to be opened. Although I always knew there was some abuse, as there always seems to be with anything, I had no idea just how wide spread the problem was.

Poachers and the continuation of some countries to harvest and sell ivory plus encroaching civilization are some of the biggest problems facing the elephant population besides abuse. As with many wild creatures, we are pushing them out.

But we do have elephants here and that makes the problem bigger than just simply banning them from a single state. What do we do to keep them safe now? These elephants cannot simply be let go into the wild. That would mean sure death for ones that were captured as babies. They need to be cared for and habitats created that would be acceptable to them. I believe that some zoo's would/could be capable of doing that. Not all zoo's are bad and they do provide a service.

*pokes her head in and looks confused* I think law-makers think they need to do something to justify their salary. There are stupid laws I agree Topsinapod. Banning elephants form a circus is probably a stupid law but with some good reasonings too. I think the BAD circus should be banned NOT the elephant. I give you an example of a few of our stupid lwas that have are or are being sent to the "round file". The one that is in the "round file" sorta needed to be sent there ( from my perspective as "not comfy with guns person"), the law was if you shot a perason who had broken in your house as long as he was in your house by the time the cops got there you weren't prosecuted. You were using justifiable force. You could have shot the dude in your front yard and dragged him back in to your house. The law now reads that you can only use the justifiable force if the person had a deadly weapon and you can prove he had intent to kill you. To me the first law was stupid because I hate guns. The next law that is being attacked is the three strikes you are out law. Ca has the most strictest law.. if you are caught even for a misdameanor and you have 2 felonies on your record you are sent to prison for life. They want to cahnge the 3 strikes you are out to "violent crimes". I kinda agree but what about the dude who gets out of jail for a violent crime (who shouldn't have gotten out in my opinion ) commits a non -violent felony? Does he get to keep commiting non-violent crimes until he commits a violent crime? Ok enough of me and my mind wondering. I'mm off to the WOW kitchen.
