I think I echo the feelings of many in my community this morning as we watch the morning news on television and are devastated by the pictures... I'm very sad at the loss of part of our city's history...

A devastating fire last night destroyed many businesses in our historical quarter. This area holds so many memories for me. The buildings are historical, and as a city with a large university, it is a favorite not only of students, but one of the few places here were people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy the cultural and artistic flavor of the area, the architecture, the buskers and the many specialty shops, bistros, cafes, gay-friendly stores, galleries, etc... This wasn't simply a place to "go" (as one might aimlessly wander and just "end up" somewhere) -- this was an EXPERIENCE.

I'm very saddened by this...

The story:

The following pictures may not be the best around, but hopefully they will communicate just how special this avenue is to us here in Edmonton and how dear it is to my heart. I hope you enjoy them.

This is where the fire started. This building is completely GONE now. http://www2.kobe-u.ac.jp/~taro/whyte...hyte_ave02.jpg The picture shows it as it was...

This picture shows the building engulfed:

The facade simply collapsed onto the street and the building is no more.

Nearly an entire city block... GONE!

Thank you, friends. I'm very sad.

{{{ Liam }}}

I'm in shock and very deeply saddened by this, but knowing the character and resilience of Edmontonians, I am sure people will mobilize resources as necessary, pull together, and rebuild with that sense of pride that makes our city so wonderful. Keeping the faith. That is what allowed the small settlement of Strathcona to grow into the cherished community that is Whyte Avenue and its environs.

I also believe that although disaster can claim material things, it can in no way snuff out tenacity, faith, and conviction.

((((((((WA114 )))))))))) I'm so sorry for your loss. Perhaps in time when the people rebuild some of it's orginal luster will come though Then you can look at the new beauty of it. until that time my heart goes out to you and all who lost that part of their history. God bless.
