The chances of that amendment to the constitution getting the support it needs to pass falls right between slim and none. That's one of the neat things about our constitution.. you can't amend it on a whim and you can't amend it overnight.

Plus, 2004 is an election year and the polls (which I generally have no use for but politicians do) show that support for gay and lesbian relationships is higher than it ever has been in all the age brackets, including the 65+ age bracket. Without a true "witch hunt" mentality to work with (like the one that sent us to war in Iraq) you can rest assure that many, many politicians are going to shy away from an amendment like that in favor of some issue that is more likely to get them re-elected.

You know MInty, I had to laugh when you were talking about the guy who was spewing off about insurance. A lot of insurance companies offer Domestic Partner coverage. You have to proved you've been sharing a residence for at least a year. So his concern about gays and lesbians having multiple partners and insurance having to cover them is a mute point. That's one of the reasons the stipulation was put in place. But it not only covers gays and lesbians, it covers heterosexual domestic partners as well.

I thought it was kinda mute too. The guy was misinformed about how long it would take to get a divorce appearantly.. in Ca it takes 6 months for a divorce to become legal . At the most what a person can change legal partners what 2 times a year if they work fast? It was just the stereo type that Gays change partners fast that got my juices going .. personally I see just the opposite happening here. I know more Gay and Lesbian couple who have been together for more then 20 years then I know straight people who have been married for 5 years or more anymore these days. Good point DLC. I was upset about the mis -concepts that these people were spewing. Of course there was was some one who had to quote the Bible .. I don't think he knew exactly what he was quoting .. he only quoted bits and peices of the Bible passages and put them together . I may not know much about the Bible but I know enough to know that this guy was only taking what he wanted from the passages he tried to recite LOL.
Tammy I have a feeling you are right. I don't think there will be an adment change this summer but it will be coming soon especially if Mass passes a law that dosen't define marriage between man and woman only. I think that if it goes to Congress most will be abstaning from actually votin one way or another for a while just because of the up coming big elections in 2004.

I fail to understand the "logic" of those who say gay/lesbian marriage would "undermine" marriage. If anything, allowing gay/lesbian marriage should strengthen the institution because then more people would be making the commitment, adding a broader base for support for marriage, etc. It's always seemed to me that inclusion is what strengthens, not exclusion. To exclude same-sex couples from marrying weakens the instutition because it forces loving couples who would otherwise make the legal commitment --with it's more difficult divorce--into living together where separation is easier.

An amendment to the US Constitution is not the answer. Marriage laws are one of the groups of laws that are left to the state (which other states recognize the rights of). Perhaps an amendment to the states' constutions would be in order, but since marriage isn't covered under Federal law at all, amending the US Constutition isn't the place to do it. It would be nice to take care of the gay/lesbian marriage issue in one fell swoop, but this isn't a federal issue. It's one of the rights left to states. (See the 10th Amendment)

PrincessArista, I understand where you are coming from it is up to each state weather or not to allow Gay and Lesbian Marriages. Many states have actually passed biils into laws that spefically limit marrige to a male and female couple only. If there is a state that will pass a law saying it is ok for same sexed couples to marry no other state has to recongize it . Even if the state recongized a same sexed marriage the couple will only be entitiled to that the state rights that the state has given married couples. When a hetrosexual couple gets married they automatically have all of the state rights and federal rights that come along with that marriage/union and every state will recongize that union. I don't know if there needs to be an adment change per say but having the Federal goverment saying that every state has to recognize any legally married couple reguardless of sexual orientation would be nice. There is word that a Senator has suggested that he wants to make an Adament stating that marriage is to be only between male and female (I forget who it is but when I can find that info I'll post it) I am so glad the most of the women in WOW aren't prejuidce! Now if the outside world would take a lesson

Minty, I don't know what an Adamant to the Constitution is but I do know what an Amendment is :-)

However, as I said, it would be nice if enlightment could come as a Federal action, but the appropriate place would be for each state to do the right thing. And quite frankly, it probably would take less time and be easier to accomplish. All it takes is a few states to get on the ball and the rest, with the exception of the Bible Belt, would fall in. And who wants to live there anyway? It's hot, muggy, poorer quality of life and full of judgemental people.

I live in the heart of the Bible belt, a middle-sized-town in Alabama... some of these folks would surprise you. Please don't let the far-right ultra-conservative Christian-Coalition-Dobson-Disciple-homophobic Bible-thumping blockheaded rednecks color your view. When I kissed my gf goodbye for the first time right in public (because we don't live together), I expected the good ol' boys around here to let me have it... to my surprise, no one batted an eyelash, and they don't mind a bit when my kids and I include the neighborhood young'uns in our outside play. (Maybe it's because we also go to church every Sunday?)

I don't think Alabama will see same-sex marriage any time soon, if ever, as long as we have people like Judge Roy Moore in charge. But Georgia has a pretty good chance, thanks in large part to the folks in Atlanta.

hmmmmmmm I think Maine is worse than the Bible Belt. The Christian right succeeded in shooting down Gay rights here a couple of years ago.

((((((((((Susie)))))))))))) Your right to be proud of Ontario. You live in an enlightened place.
