It's your experience, which makes it a judgement.

I live in the bible belt and I've lived in one part of it or another for most of my life. There are certainly some closed minded people here, but the bible belt has not cornered the market closed minded people. And, I'll support that argument with 4 lil ole words.. the Knight Initiative passed.

We can argue "poorer quality of life" some other day.

We're obviously an opinionated, intelligent group of women in here.. so... what are we doing that will actually help stop that amendment from passing? Posting and discussing is all fine and good, because it helps us understand each other and learn, but it's not going to change anything "out there" where that amendment is hanging.

Show of hands.. who has contacted their congressional type people and voiced an opinion to them about this.. by phone, fax, mail.. anything short of ESP? We know (to quote mosquito) the "far-right ultra-conservative Christian-Coalition-Dobson-Disciple-homophobic Bible-thumping blockheaded rednecks" have

So how many of you remember last year Indy organised the quilt block exchange ??? Well this year for you non crafty folks (and you crafty folks too) how many would be interested in a postcard exchange? A lot of us chat with roomies from different places, how about geting a lot more, even ppl you wouldn't have thought of ?? Postcards are an easy way to say Hello and give someone a little piece of where you are. Plus it's way cheaper than driving lol

Sometimes it's difficult to listen to the news when I wake up in the morning. You just never know what's going to come down the pike next.

Today they said that our esteemed President is trying to get legislation passed that would outlaw same sex marriages. This is a reaction to the California Supreme Courts decision that struck down the sodomy laws of that state.

According to the Associated Press:
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON, July 30 ? President Bush said Wednesday he has government lawyers working on a law that would define marriage as a union between a woman and a man, casting aside calls to legalize gay marriages.

?I BELIEVE MARRIAGE is between a man and a woman and I believe we ought to codify that one way or the other and we have lawyers looking at the best way to do that,? the president said a wide-ranging news conference at the White House Rose Garden.

Bush also urged, however, that America remain a ?welcoming country? ? not polarized on the issue of homosexuality.

?I am mindful that we?re all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor?s eye when they got a log in their own,? the president said. ?I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts.?

?On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage,? he added.

Also in that article:
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., is the main sponsor of the proposal offered May 21 to amend the Constitution. It was referred on June 25 to the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution.

As usual, for every step forward, there is someone that wants to keep things as they are.

I have been with my other half for 22 years February 1st. and have had to be very careful all these years to put everything that we have/own in BOTH our names lest one of us die and the other be without. You don't have to take those extreem steps if you can be married. You can be carried on your spouces insurance if married. I cannot here in Maine. But you can live with the opposite sex for 5 years and the insurance companys have to cover you but NOT same sex. hmmmmm 22 years verses 5? What's wrong with this picture?

It is wrong topsy - you are right!

Why is this an issue in this day and age? Why can't we all just be equal? Why does it matter what sex the person you love is? I don't understand.

I was so proud to be an Ontarian when they passed legislation approving same-sex marriages, and I really honestly thought the US would not be far behind.....what a shame......

I have something in regards to your posts on the Gay marriage issue. I think it was DLC who posted the addie to write your congressman.. I did and I am going to post the letter I wrote to him and he the letter he wrote to me in response. I'll post it in 2 posts so it won't be one long post for ya'll to read. This is just to give you an idea of what kind of people we have in office.

Dear Congressman Ose,
I am writing in regards to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist saying he wants to propose
an amendment to the US Constitution stating that marriage should be between one man and one woman only. 39 Republicans and five Democrats are agreeing to back Mr. Frist.
I am urging you to vote AGAINST this issue if it should come up. I feel in my heart that if the ammendment were to pass it would put America back several decades in it's progress in equal rights for the Gay , Lesbian, Transgender and Bisexual communties.
In my opinion allowing a same sex couple to legally marry would NOT hurt the institution of marriage. I firmly believe that allowing same sex couples to get married and have every right their heterosexual conterparts have will only ADD to the institution of marriage.
I know of several same sexed partners who have been together at least 30 years. I know of very few heterosexual couples last 10 years in marriage. I am not saying that there aren't heterosexual couples who stay married any more , it is just rare.
Mr. Frist has been quoted saying " marriage should be between one man and one woman, not two men and three men or four men, or one man or one woman or two women and three women or three women and three men." I think he was trying to get people to believe that same sex partners are not faithful to their partners. I have wittnessed just the opposite. I am in support of marriage being limited to 2 partners only regardless of their sexual oriention who are committed to each other.
If there should be any changes in federal marriage laws it should be to make getting a divorce harder to obtain. In my opinion it is people being able to obtain "uncontested" divorces that are weaking the institution of marriage. People go to judges every day and get divorced for no appearant reason and are free to marry again in 6 months in many states, some states such as Neveda they can remarry in just 6 weeks after seeing a judge.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought President Clinton refused to spefically address the issue of gay Marriage by means of federal laws. I thought that President Clinton actually stated that he believed it was an issue for each state to define marriage not for the federal goverment to decide. In my personal opinion Clinton really didn't help the Gay and Lesbian community as he said he would anyhow. Clinton was to busy playing "politcian", in my opinion. Well I have been on the puter long nough..time for me to get off my bootay and try to see what I can do. /me slolwy walks away. Love to all my WOW roomies
