(((Quietwow))) I'll go ahead and start this out for you. My husbands family always gets together for Christmas Eve and has a party. Everyone brings a dish for the potluck and we eat and visit as we usually don't see much of each other during the year. One of his uncles then reads from the bible and we sing songs. At the end of the night we do a gift exchange. It's always alot of fun and a nice time to get to visit with everyone. jules

This time of year when I begin to take down the Christmas boxes from the garage rafters, I think of the ways my mom decorated her house when I was a child. We did not have a lot of money for the kinds of things that I have now, so she made do. She saved tinsel and reused it. She did the thing with a Reader's Digest--folded into the shape of a standing tree and sprayed gold. She once found a long boat-shaped frond of a palm and set it in the middle of her table filled with red balls. She hemmed a red cloth, stencilled it with green and white poinsettia blossoms and it became her best holiday tablecloth. She melted wax and crayons into liquid and let it set in tin cans that she'd oiled. The result of Christmas candles. Not even the gleam on my Mexican tin angels can outshine my mother's Christmas decorations. ((((Mom))))

Lou that made me remember too. My mom used to save Lipton soup envelopes during the year. Back then they were like tinfoil inside. Then near to Christmas she would get them out and we would all (5 kids) make angels for the tree with them. Then the baking would begin! My mother made Christmas fruit cakes that she wrapped in tea towels soaked in rum for a month. We kids were only allowed a little bite. Tons of cookies of every variety, mince meat pies and Poor Man's Cake were my favorites. I have that recipe by the way if anyone would like it (Poor Man's Cake). We also had little but made do. I think that any extra bit of money went for baking products! It was a time when kids got hard candies covered with fuzz and oranges and walnuts in their stockings and were happy with that and maybe a deck of cards. Christmas was not so much what was under the tree but a time of year that was set apart and different from all other times of the year.

Smile Recipe request of Poor Man's Cake

I was wandering thru the message boards and came across your post. Could you please post the recipe for the Poor Man's Cake. Also, now that my kids are getting older I am reverting back to old fashioned types of christmas'. To where you have to make the gift for someone else not buy it. My kids groan about it but i dont care. I am not J.D. Rockerfeller. Yet so far they do like making the homemade gifts and they last longer than the store bought ones. LOL I hope that all have a great day and peace to all.

I remember stringing popcorn for the tree and dried berries with my siblings. We also use to (5 of us) take the sled and go down this huge hill to the xmas tree lot and pick out our xmas tree and tie it to the sled and push it back up that huge hill, we loved going to find our tree.

I remember every year a few days after my sister's birthday we would get the our Christmas tree. I think one of the best Christmas's I had as a kid was the year my mother made our Christmas gifts. All 4 or us kids that were at home got the same things .. but different colors. Mom made pillow stuffed animal toys. Mom made BIG dinners and invited anyone over who didn't have a family. Mom had the same Christmas decorations for years... she also saved the Christmas ornaments we made at school.

We had a similar Christmas when my mom made us all stuffed animals. My sister got a big round cartoon-like friar. My brother got something called a 'gronk,' a long crazy looking thing that hung from his bed, its arms looped around the headboard. I got a stuffed mouse, that wasn't finished because Mom ran out of time. He's still unfinished...he has eyes, but no nose or mouth. His tail was a pipecleaner...there's still a bit of pipe cleaner where his tail used to be.

I was four years old when I got that mouse!
