What movies have you seen recently? Do you have any recommendations for "must see" movies, or warnings about the "avoid at all costs!" variety? Give us your thumbs up or down!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon...


A must see movie. The good thing about this movie is that men will want to go with you just for the fight scenes. But this is a movie for women, about women.

I thought it was awesome, just awesome. Bring kleenex.

Oh, and even if you usually hate subtitles..ask anyone who has seen it, after the first 15 minutes, you won't care about the subtitles at all. You just want more movie.

This was evidenced by the complaints of many who were in the theater when the tape melted after the first fight scene and they could not show the movie...talk about an unhappy crowd...LOL

Oh Yeah...another one I loved. This is an old one. You can rent this one in the foreign film section. One of my favs...you must watch it all the way thru to get the point of the movie..and those who know me, will know why I love it so much...

And yes, it is another subtitled movie. (Well, Hollywood is so skin-deep, doesn't make for great thought-provoking or moving screen stuff)..

Curious yet?? Okay.....

Trust me, you will love this movie!!

I am intending to see crouching tiger, if only because I love Chinese flicks with subtitles. I am fascinated by Chinese anything. Now I can't wait to see it. Thanks Feline

You are gonna LOVE that movie...so will the rest of your family. People want to clap out loud in this film. Cracks me up. You are breathless in certain parts and then all you can do it is say...."Wow, that was cool" ;-)

I cannot believe you haven't seen Lola yet. Only because you were the first person I thought of when I saw this movie. Maybe it was the music. I'm not sure, but it seemed like it had your name written all over it. It is VERY intriguing. Run, Lola, Run is your kind of movie..I just know it.

I agree, Liam will really like Run Lola Run! :-)

I hope more people are giving subtitled films a chance these days. Some of my all time favorites are subtitled films. Like Water For Chocolate, Cinema Paradiso, Il Postino, Life Is Beautiful, Au Revoir Les Enfants, Jean De Florette, Manon of the Spring. Such beautiful films.

I saw Chocolat a couple of months ago, it was wonderful! And, if you like The Coen brother's films, don't miss O Brother, Where Art Thou? It was really very good!

I adore the Coen Brothers. Barton Fink is probably my favorite. Is John Turturro in O Brother!?

Another wonderful movie to add to the list of foreign films: Cyrano de Bergerac with Gerard Depardieu. LOVE IT!!

Tamara and I went to see Knight's Tale (normally, we're not much on movie theatres, but Heath Ledger NEEDS a big screen... ::weg::

. It was much better than I expected. Ledger is actually a pretty good actor - he hits the subtle notes as well as the "in your face" stuff. The young Chaucer character steals several scenes, though, and the "love interest" is horrible. She's not pretty, she's not a very "real" character, just unbelievable all the way around. Hard to tell if she's a bad actress, or just written badly.

In keeping with Tamara's current Heath Ledger theme.. we rented 10 Things I Hate About You. Also better than expected (I've been seeing it on the shelves and avoiding it...). We actually watched it twice and it was good both times, though not as howlingly funny the second time. They did a good job of updating the Taming of the Shrew to modern situations and language...

Also rented The Emperor's New Groove, and I wasn't impressed. I think they showed all the best parts in the trailers. Cute, but not a Disney classic by any stretch of the imagination.

Went to see Pearl Harbor on Memorial Day. I have heard mixed reviews. The starring actress (some forgettable name) was awful, but the rest of the cast was ok especially Alec Baldwin who is eye candy no matter what role he is in. It was a sad movie of course. It was thought provoking and I think it is good for kids to see who did not grow up hearing about it like some of us did.

Tomb Raider wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It was just a slight bit above average. I won't suggest it to y'all unless you really get into that actress.

The Animal gets Sophmoric Comedy of the Year Award. Some of it was slightly funny but most of it was yawnnnn.

I saw Spielberg's latest film today, and it is fascinating, brilliant, goes too far, and does not go far enough. Finally, the threads did not hold together for me, but as the hours pass and I think about the characters and scenes, it doesn't matter because I like being troubled by provoking events and human behavior. I think it was good for Spielberg to have to carry Kubrick's ghost on this one because it meant that the film's ending was never a sure thing. And I think Osment is other-worldly on and off screen. This is an adult film, and I hope you get to see it.

Requiem for a Dream ... wow! This was one movie I had to wait on even to think about. The overall theme is drugs in America, prescription/street/junkies/dealers. It also dealt with family and friend issues, the treatment of the elderly, inattentive doctors, women and their bodies, and a million things. The director did an excellent job, and has made the most realistic depiction of dieting I've ever seen in a movie. lol Of course, that would stand out for me.

I just wish we hadn't of gotten the Director's Cut. MrHilie did not read the fine print "This film not yet rated, contains explicit sexual content." I'm not a prude by any means, but I do believe there are some things that can be said without being shown.

We were planning on taking Nate (3 yrs) to see his first theater movie: Cats & Dogs. Unfortunately I just ran across a few reviews by mothers of other young children who said it was WAY too violent for kids under 7 or 8. One mom said kids under 10, but then again, some moms are more protective than others. Anyone see it who can offer an opinion?
