US editorial votes

The ongoing debates (August 2015) among potential Republican presidential candidates reminded me of a note I posted several years ago. Below is a link to an updated (and hopefully better) version of this note:

How can a retired teacher miss an opportunity for sharing what he thinks he understands better? Feel free to share the above link with all who might be interested, especially students. Comments will be appreciated, as usual.

I've argued for years that we need to get rid of the electoral votes. With technology being what it is, it really shouldn't be that difficult to make every person's vote count...Every. Person's. Vote. The electoral vote may have been necessary during the founding years of this country, but that no longer holds true. With computers, etc., it should be one person, one vote. And I'm sure that Gore wasn't the first to run for president and get a majority of votes but lose because of the electoral votes, just the most notable in recent history.

BTW, in Florida, I saw numerous bumper stickers after the 2000 election that read "It isn't official until your brother has counted the votes." (Yup, Jeb was Fla's gov. at the time.)
