Buddhism

We watched Bernardo Bertalucci's "Little Buddha" over the weekend and, while it was a rather muddled presentation of the story of Siddhartha, it was still intriguing and reminded me of past studies I've done of Buddhism. I think it's time to get the books out and start reading again.

Any Buddhists on board?

Hi gsf! Very nice to see you, and I enjoy talking to you as well. I would consider myself a Buddhist above all other things, although I don't formally practice. I can identify most closely with that philosophy and those beliefs, however, and certainly need some 'quiet' in my life.

Hello,Cod.Sometimes it suddenly occurs to me what to tell,and I post it to message board.I can't often post reply at once because I'm not skillful in English very much.There are many messages which I can't understand even though I consult a dictionary.I want to speak English more fluently in the future.

I'm a Buddhist.In our country it is usual to go to Shinto shrine in New Year's Day,hold a wedding in a church,and do a Buddhist funeral in someone's life.(I never do such a thing.)Those who do so say that they don't believe religion.These act is often considered strange and critisized by foreign people.So we have been given an education that you had better said that you were Buddhist when you were in a foreign country even though you weren't really so.But how would you think when you knew that they told a falsehood because they wanted you to trust them?I feel such a way of thinking and act is to deceive you and sad.

I agree, gsf. I can't understand that thinking either. I also don't understand why people make such condemning judgments about religions they know nothing about. Greg (my husband) and I are similar to Liam and consider ourselves Buddhist even though we do not formally practice.

We have just met a Native American who has agreed to teach us about the belief system she follows.

I live in what is referred to as the "Bible Belt" and a lot of people here try to live what they call a "Godly" life. It is difficult for us because we do not agree. We have found that there is a Buddhist temple close to us and will probably go there to learn.

Please ask questions if you don't understand something I post. I will be happy to help you.

A clarification:

We do agree about living a Godly life, we just don't agree with the details of what a Godly life is. I have great respect for all who believe and strive to grow spiritually.

in my spiritual travel to become, finally, a "universal" spiritualist ( ie parts of almost all religions mixed into one ) i spent time as a practicing buddhist and have many of those beliefs still in my spiritualistic make up now. The form i practiced is a bit different from the more well known forms like zen. I will gladly answer any and all questions any may have on this.

I've taken a few classes on Buddhism and kudos to those who are Buddhist because it seems ridiculously difficult. A religion where the ultimate goal is to achieve nothingness is hard to imagine, much less actually practice.
