Never Thought I'd Be Here

Hi everyone. It feels weird...in a good way...that I'm here on a woman's forum. Growing up I always felt women were the enemy...I was the girl who hated other girls, who hated cattiness and pettiness and drama. I thought men had the better end, they were more grounded.

So I thought. As I grew out of being a child and teen, I learned that connecting with my fellow women is important...perhaps most important. I have grown so much in the past few years and feel as if I need a place to be a woman around other women being women.

Last night, a male friend took me to see the Vagina Monologues and I was so thrilled I posted about it on a social networking site. I always felt like a "modern woman" but watching the VM made me realize that we still have a way to go. Hearing the reply from a male friend who believed no one should see the VM because the playwright is a "deranged psychopath" made me sad...and I felt sadder that I didn't have a place to go. I have been trying to hang out with more female friends but it's hard because everyone's life is crazy...so I realized that an online forum for women really is the place to be.

I am happy to be here, it feels like I'm freeing a part of myself that I held back for so long.

Thanks, Unicorn. I feel like opening up to woman will leave me embraced...it always has and I wish for that feeling more frequently than when my very small circle of female friends can meet with me.

I also joined a woman's group in the local area. It's not "local" and actually is about an hour or so drive, but my best friend is also attending. It should be good for both of us.

Hey, Moniker and gairagav! Welcome to WOW. Great bunch of women here.

Moniker, I hear you on the whole cattiness thing. Seems like so many women (girls, females of all ages) were into the whole make-up/cheerleading/deferring to men/cattiness type of thing. Now, while I have nothing against make-up for those who prefer using it (and know how to use it without pancaking it on in a parody sort of way) and I know many strong women who once did the cheerleading thing, I was always what was called a tom-boy in the late '50s and early '60s. "You can't play sports, you're a girl!" "Yeah, right!"

Thank goodness there were enough like-minded people who realized that women can, indeed, play sports and be doctors and lawyers and men can cook, cheer on the women in their lives and work as nurses and elementary school teachers.

But I digress...Welcome!

I'm with you, RJS. I also found that there ARE women like us, and think I realize why it is hard to know that growing up. Kids, teens especially, are struggling to fit in. As social creatures, that's a big deal to us...well, most of us (I just wanted to be myself, regardless of what society wants). Teens become charicatures of adults, emphasizing traits and insulting others to emphasize themselves and why people should be friends with them instead of the insulted person. Most of the time, people grow out of that, but "old souls" tend to grow more into themselves instead of into society.
