Fly Tying and Fishing

More and more women are getting involved in this peaceful, non-competitive sport of Fly-Fishing. And of course, the other side is Fly Tying as a hobby, with or without fishing!

I think I am a workaholic. I hate being gone from work and come in, over the summer, (unpaid to check my labs etc.,) and fret away from work.

Fly fishing and tying flies helps me move from the virtual to real life. I get so deep into the rythmn of casting hours fly by. I have gotten up at 4 am to be on the water at sunrise. (This is a big deal as I am not a morning person.) I've fished 12 hours at a go, and am shocked at the quick pace time rushed past me. It seemed like I was only there a couple hours.

There is something so pure and elemental. And the challenge of casting to fish, with a lure made of fur and feathers, seeking to trick it into thinking it's a bug by slick wiggles of the fly line... it feeds the soul.

And Lou, my friend, you must come to Colorado. We must go up to the high country and let the rockies and the trout seduce you too

I love Colorado, and if I were ever to finally leave California, it would be to live in Colorado. My mother was born there in a coal camp called Sopris that is now no more than a smooth spot on the south eastern prairie. She has family in Pueblo and the Springs. I have been to the Denver area twice in my life, once as a kid when we went to Estes Park, camped at Lake Granby, rode horses; and again when I was writing my master's thesis on my mother's life and the coal mining labor wars in Colorado. Most of my Colorado time, however, has been spent in Durango. My father and I made many a pack trip into the San Juans, just him, me, and our horses. I loved those times.

The place I live is right outside boulder. They have a small "mining museum" here. I live in an old company mining house.

I fish estes park a lot, but not over on the divide (western slope.) want to do a few weeks car camping and fishing the headwaters of the Colorado River this summer, including Lake Grandby and shadow lake.

I started on Middleton's On The Spine of Time but it was just too jocular for me right now. My sister bought me a copy of Fly Fishing The Front Range. And I bought myself a copy of Mountain Water. The latter is excellent. I wish I had read it prior to hitting some of the meadow waters of Estes, I could have been a more effective teacher. On the other hand, nuance is not high on the list for people their first trip out.

I did get Dana Rikimaru to teach my kids to cast. I cannot recomend her highly enough! Very organized, passionate, witty... she made even knots seem fun to a group of 12 14-18 year old kids. Her book is brilliant. When my friend comes to visit me, I am booking Dana for a one day guiding trip (she can guide me and teach her.) Over xmas break I am planning on kidnapping Dana and going out to the S. Platte to camp and fish in the snow.

Found a place a mere 3 miles from work... heh... with 7.5 pound 'bows in it!!!! Wahooooooo!

If you convert a spin caster to fly fishing you get a toaster oven.

If you convert a bait fisherman to fly fishing you get a icrowave.

Going at the end of the month to Meramac River for the "white hatch". Perhaps I will get to catch my first REAL trout on a dry fly.

My only catch on a dry mayfly was so pathetic, that when I held it up to show my fishing partner all she could get out (between bellowing laughter) was that she thought it was a lure<---which was the actual trout lightly dangling from the end of my tippet.
